Penguin-Flipping Part 2- Palin's Story

Palin's Penguin Flipping Adventure!
You betcha! She started it all (well maybe Palin didn't actually flip a penguin in the real world, but in Jen-Blogger world... she sure did.)  Here is the picture to prove it!
The penguin's name is Pasquale Penguin and he was nothing less than honored to have been flipped by one, Mrs. Sarah Palin.  He commented, "She was gentle when picking me up, yet had enough force when flipping me that i completely rotated in the air.  The perfect penguin-flipper if I do say so myself."   It is an old Alaskan tale that only when a girl has flipped her first penguin, does she become a woman.  So every year, on the day after Thanksgiving, when the rest of America is up at 4 a.m. shopping, Alaskan girls (usually around the age of 13) are out with their Penguins.
Happy Black Friday or White Friday (as they call it in Alaska)!

Gobble 'til You Wobble!

The meal I consumed yesterday was nothing short of amazing!  We started off with a salad which my Aunt Mary Ann made and she used wine vinegar instead of the regular one, it made my taste buds do a happy dance!  Next came the stuffing and the mashed potatoes and the sweet potatoes and... of course, Tom.  Tom was cooked to perfection, best turkey I've ever seen! The smell of Tom when he hit the table was mouth watering and the taste, oh the taste.  My taste buds stopped their salad happy dance because they were dazzle by what they just encountered!
So, with that, I would like to thank Tom for unwillingly giving his life for my fabulous Thanksgiving Dinner.

Feature Story

Why Does Romance Fade; Yet Friends Can Last Forever

A young woman in her mid-twenties is seated at a bar.  She is dressed in business attire; a black, short sleeve dress cut just above the knee.  She listens patiently while her soon-to-be ex boyfriend continues with his “it’s not you it’s me speech.”  They seem to end on good terms.  Breakups are all too common in our society today.  It is a very rare instance that a person will enter a “committed” relationship with someone without a backup-breakup plan.  So why is it that we are able to keep friends for 30 years, but lovers, even spouses, may not last more than five?

The answer to that can be found in one very obvious way.  Look it up.  By definition, a friend is “a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.”  Mutual affection; it seems so apparent. One has to give and take for a bond to last.  One also has to have a desire, which should be shared by both parties, to be with the other person. Yet, when we venture to the other pages of the dictionary and look up words such as boyfriend, girlfriend, lover, and spouse, a “mutual affection” is nowhere to be found, but seems to focus more on the sexual aspect.  Some form of the word “relation” is in each of them, however, the phrase one would think that is most necessary for relations that take people to “more than friends” doesn’t seem important enough to define.

We now get a better understanding of what makes a friendship last and why a  “relationship” tends to fall apart at the seams.  The strands that hold a friendship together are intertwined with a tighter, more trustworthy hold than that of the typical frazzled and frayed strand that two people believe will make a lasting commitment in a romantic relationship.  It is not to say that romantic relationships are doomed and one should never enter into one, however, keep in mind that there should be mutuality to it.  A mutuality that goes beyond just the physical desire to be with each other, but rather a genuine appreciation for the each other’s individuality.

Penguin-Flipping

Penguin-Flipping.  It is a noble art.  One that takes skill, grace, and of course, a penguin.

Penguins, they are the cutest, cuddliest, most clumsy creatures in creation .  They just waddle along on land and live their little lives being downright adorable.  Could you just picture it if someone came and just flipped one.  Just picked one up and turned him, plopped him back in the snow on his head.  His little legs waving in the hair, shaking his tail feathers.  I know it sounds insanely cruel, but keep the image with me for a minute and tell me it’s not slightly amusing.

Penguins are resilient, they don’t mind having their head in the snow for a few seconds, they just pop back up, shake their head, look at you with those loving and forgiving eyes, and waddle on their way.

Ponder Penguin-Flipping; the perfect polar pastime for penguin-loving people .

Anger!

Is anger actually an emotion?  Somebody told me the once that is was an expression, but not an actual emotion.  I’m not 100% sure I believe it’s true, but it does seem to have some sense behind it.  When I asked what the person meant when she said it was an expression she simply asked me, “what makes you angry?” At that point in time my answer was “frustration.”

“There you go,” she continued, “frustration is the emotion you feel and anger the way in which you express it.”

So, how exactly can you define the expression of anger?  Is it a form of violence?  They may not make sense either.  If we take, for example, a hockey game, the players are energized, the puck goes in, the crowd goes wild.  Jumping, screaming, hitting.  All acts associated with an expression of anger, yet it’s not, it’s joy.

Is it safe to say that we can question whether anger exists at all? Of course we feel the rage of a situation and go into our fits, but when we stop and analyze, are we capable of getting “angry.”

Halloween

Halloween.  Not really my thing.  I'm still getting dressed up and going to the Village for the 1st time, but it's still not all that exciting to me.  I have friends who are very much into this holiday, with the costumes and the parties.  I wish I was more into it but being that I don't like to be scared it seems to be a pointless holiday for me.  Once Christmas rolls around I will be a very happy girl! But for now I am looking a little forward to dressing up as a cabaret dancer and trying to look as much like Liza as possible without going to extremes.
I hope everyone stays safe on Friday and has bunches of fun!
p.s. BOO!...........AHH!

Rehab

Liza's back in rehab. I don't know if anyone really cares. I'm not even 100% sure I really care. I was told it was just a day rehab. how does that work exactly? Is it like drive-thru rehab? "Yes, I'll have some rehab and a Coke." "I'm sorry ma'am we cant give you Coke... will Pepsi do?" Perhaps I shouldn't make fun, but the concept is a little amusing to me.

Quelf

Do you want to talk about random? I believe that is why you came.  Let's talk about a game that is all about the random!  A game that has players sitting under tables, talking like pirates, or even yelling "All hail the Chinese cheese biscuit" whenever a 1 is rolled on the die.  A game that, on the box, says it includes "1 giant invisible harpoon* (*It's invisible for a reason, use it wisely)"
Quelf only seems to be available on-line, but it is definitely worth the buy, especially if you have a group of friends that are willing to get a little crazy to win a game. I know people that don't like to sit through board games that were asking to play again as soon as the game ended.  I don't want to give a lot away but if you like random, I would definitely check it out!

Something to Ponder.

Why would horses, especially king's horses, care about putting an egg back together?... again.
I'm not entirely sure I get it.  First of all, a horse doesn't have the biological tools to put the egg back together.  Hooves don't have fingers, let alone opposable  thumbs, so wouldn't that just do more harm to the shell?  I suppose the horse could try to push the egg together with it's nose, but wouldn't it be too tempted to just eat the yoke instead of trying to put it back in the shell?  And, if it's a king's horse, shouldn't it be in a nice warm stable being spoiled with sugar cubes, or off aiding a heroic knight on his quest for heroism?
What was Humpty doing on a wall anyway?  If you're an egg, you're not exactly known for your balance, so why would you put yourself in a position where lack of balance could be fatal?  How would an egg even get on top of a wall, it doesn't have arms or legs to climb.   I think there's something very shady about this whole story.

Theatre Talk

I just got home from work at the St. George Theatre.  The philharmonic did "On the Town."  The music is so great.  I love old musicals, I really think I was born in the wrong decade sometimes. I'm definitely the only twenty-one year old who is genuinely  excited that Mickey Rooney is going to be coming in November and I really can't wait for the "100 Years of Broadway!"  It's going to be so amazing hearing the best songs from the best musicals over the past century.
I know this blog is starting to sound like I'm trying to promote the Theatre (which I am), but there really is going to be some wonderful shows there.  So, come! Check it out! There's popcorn =).

Music

Did you ever notice how much music effects your life? From the songs we listen to in the shower, to the tunes we jam to in the car, the music we hum along with as we shop. Music is everywhere, in almost every aspect of our lives. Listening to just one song can take us right back to an almost vivid memory of the first time we heard that song. We fall right back to the time and place and remember every lyric and melody, even if it’s been a decade since we’ve heard it.
Songs also have the ability to connect people as well. An entire friendship can start with two people sharing a love of the same song. The fact that songs have that kind of power fascinates me! So “please don’t stop the music” because “music makes the people come together.”

Commercials

That new commercial with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, does anyone have any idea what it's for.  I've seen two different variations of it and I still am not 100% sure that it's not just a reason for them to take up space on the screen for 30 seconds.  Or perhaps it's the 2008 version of "Where's the beef?"  Don't get me wrong, the commercial is still entertaining, however, isn't there usually a product being promoted?

With that being said, my procrastination abilities got the best of me, so I put all homework aside to go searching the web for the classic commercials of the 90s.  Don't you miss "Where's the cream filling" by Hostess.  Or the Pespi girl with all her voices (the one that was in Paulie and Bicentennial Man).  I think my favorites were the Mentos commercials.  I love the the one where the guy sits on the white bench that was just painted in his black suit, then he pops a Mentos and immediately knows how to fix it by laying on the bench and putting stripes on the rest of his suit.  It was classic, Mentos makes you much more clever than Tic Tacs.

You want random?... You got random!

Shoes. Bologna. Scooter. Book. Dalmatian. What do these words have in common? Absolutely nothing! That's the point, they are totally random. I realize the point of a blog is to focus on a particular subject matter and discuss, in depth, only that subject matter. But why does it only have to be one focus. In the real world my thoughts are all over the place, so why shouldn't they be completely random in my blog?
I am very intrigued by theatre, so I'm sure a lot of my posts will have to do with that. However, I didn't want to name it "Theatre talk" because what happens on the day when I want to blog about which cheese residue sticks to your fingers more, Cheetos or Doritos?

Fireworks!

Fireworks! They are used as a form of celebration, unless you're on the Titanic, then not so much. I like the primary colors, but when purple comes out, I am just dazzled. There is nothing more exciting than watching the first stream of light arise from the darkness to meet the sky with a kiss and burst freely into it with the jubilant colors of glee and bliss. So, to say that I'm excited about seeing them tonight would be an understatement.
The beach is going to be filled with people who are eager to mix the delight that only fireworks can bring, with the upbeat styling that only Billy Joel songs can provide. I eagerly await 6:30 PM when I can finally venture to the boardwalk for the excitement to begin. The sun will set, and the orange and red sky will be the perfect finale for Billy Joel, while, being the perfect opening act for the fireworks. The first white stream of light will explode into color; only then, will the night be complete.
